Q: Some Australian media reports recently alleged that China is exerting economic influence and seeking to buy national assets in Fiji, which may lead Fiji to be enslaved by Chinese debts. What's your comment on that?
A: Such allegations are completely groundless and totally unfounded, which have been repeatedly denied by the government of Fiji. China and Fiji, as well as other Pacific island countries, are all developing nations. The assistance China provides to the PICs is an integral part of South-South cooperation with the distinct features of equality, mutual benefit, sustainability and openness.
We fully respect the will of the recipient countries, offer assistance to their needs, do not interfere in their internal affairs and never attach any political strings. Following the idea of teaching a person to fish rather than simply giving him a fish, China attaches importance to helping the recipients enhance their self-reliant capabilities. All projects using Chinese concessional loans are implemented through serious feasibility study and scientific verification, taking full consideration of the financial sustainability of related countries. No country has fallen into debt crisis because of China. China’s assistance is not against any third party. We are willing to join hands with all concerned parties to improve people’s well-being of the PICs.
