Zhao Leji Meets with Fiji's Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka

On August 19, 2024, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) Zhao Leji met with Fiji's Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka in Beijing.

Zhao Leji noted that Fiji was the first Pacific island country to establish diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China, and hailed China-Fiji relations as an example of equal treatment and friendly cooperation between big and small countries. Zhao Leji said that China highly appreciates Fiji's longstanding commitment to the one-China principle and is ready to work with Fiji to deliver on the important common understandings reached between the leaders of the two countries, carry forward traditional friendship, consolidate political mutual trust, continuously expand all-round mutually beneficial cooperation, and push forward the China-Fiji comprehensive strategic partnership. China's NPC is ready to continue to strengthen exchanges at all levels with the Parliament of Fiji, and approve relevant legal documents in a timely manner, so as to provide legal guarantees for bilateral cooperation.

Noting that the one-China principle is the cornerstone of Fiji-China relations, Rabuka said that Fiji highly appreciates the major initiatives and vision put forward by President Xi Jinping and is willing to strengthen practical cooperation with China in various fields such as trade and poverty reduction and deepen exchanges between legislative bodies to better benefit the two peoples.
